'Bout time it's my year. Where my fireworks at?
Happy Chinese New Year! It seems like big news always precedes holidays here. And indeed, the news is HUGE.
Official word is that AGTTA is coming to Lucky Shoals on Monday night. For those of you not on the GTTC mailing list:
Beginning Monday, February 9th the Atlanta Georgia Table Tennis Association league will be played at Lucky Shoals. Participation in the league is three dollars for AGTTA members and five dollars for nonmembers (Don’t pay at the desk. You pay the league manger).Warm-up begins at 7:00 and league matches begin at 8:30.
With the league program AGTTA brings more tables, more players, and the best league for every level of player. The AGTTA League is recognized as one of the best table tennis programs in the country and dates back to the clubs beginnings in 1960.
Every Monday we will be using the entire Lucky Shoals gym to host a truly great table tennis league. This is a chance to play matches against players of similar abilities with the chance to win your table and advance to a more competitive group.
In addition players at Gwinnett will have the use of the extra tables for open play at other times as we begin to schedule for after basketball season and in the Summer.
It is the hope of the leadership of Gwinnett Table Tennis and the officers of AGTTA that working together we can provide for the continued enjoyment and growth of our sport.
What does this all mean? More tables. More Players. A better league and rating system. And overall, less waiting around.
Some of the more seasoned players don’t have trouble getting a table on a busy Monday night at Lucky Shoals, but if you’re below a 1200 skill level, trying to play a game that doesn’t involve getting unceremoniously spanked gets old quickly. So after a few weeks of spending more time watching games and less time playing, a lot of the newer players just stop showing up thus hampering the growth of the sport in Atlanta. Several newer players I’ve spoken with have the mentality “Why show up for 2 or 3 hours if you can only play 1 or 2 times for 10 minutes at time?”
With AGTTA’s league system, newbies and veterans alike will always be guaranteed a spot on a table on Monday’s league night. Plus those who are frustrated with their progress will now have a clear path to building newer skills. ‘Tis a happy new year indeed.
